Camping Trips with the Boys

Tyler recently turned 13, and as I did with Chad at that age, I took him camping as a sort of 'rite of passage' (one of the tasks he was given was to start the fire... I think he forgot all his scout training!). We had a great time together as I began the process of training him to be a man.

A couple of weeks later, I took both boys to the annual Father Son Retreat in Oakland, IL. This is a four-day camp geared towards home-schooling fathers and sons, and has a mix of adventure-type activities mixed with solid Bible teaching on raising godly young men.

We had a great time doing activities that included a canoe trip and time on the rifle range:

The speakers were Norm Wakefield and Ed Harrell, one of the survivors of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in WWII (the ship that carried the atomic bombs out to Tinian Island, from where they were launched in B-29 bombers against Japan). The messages were all very challenging and encouraging!

Finally, Chad and I entered in the pedal boat races, and placed second - missing the best time by only 1 second!

Needless to say, we had a fantastic time together!
