Our small farm consists of 15.5 acres total. This is split into about 11 acres that are planted in alfalfa hay, two acres fenced in for pasture, maybe 1/2 acre for garden and my 'experimenting patch,' and the rest for lawn, buildings, etc.

November 1, 2008 - Combining Corn

Last year, I used my two-row New Idea corn picker to harvest our corn (and a lot of skin off my hand), but this year, I had the opportunitiy to borrow a neighbor's John Deere 6600 combine, which was too good to pass up. It made harvesting go very quickly, and the only major hiccup was when the fuel strainer plugged up and shut the engine down - took me longer to figure out the problem than it did to fix it.

Tyler and I cleaned out the chicken coop today, spreading the manure on the former corn patch using the 8N and John Deere spreader. I also hooked up the disc harrow and disced a little, but we had to stop for chores, and by the time we got back it was supper time.

Planted corn today. Disced yesterday, and then got 1/2" of rain overnight. We can't seem to put 24 hours of dry together just yet.

Used the John Deere 494 planter, sans planters, to drag 36" furrows into which we then used our one-row hand-push planter to sow the seed.

April 2009 - bought a nearly mint-condition John Deere 1240 planter at auction today. The 494 will now either go to scrap or I may try to ebay it...

Also, bought a very used horse trailer recently:
